ABSTRACT

All schools have aims statements, many display them prominently for all to see, and many echo the ambitions of this one. But, as all those involved with schools know only too well, developing the statement is one thing, making it a lived reality is quite another. Creating ‘an atmosphere which promotes positive values of tolerance, kindness and understanding, where we encourage everyone to co-operate with and be considerate to others; a school in which we all feel valued’ means taking steps so that such ambition can permeate all aspects of school life and apply equally to everyone involved. Ultimately, it is about consciously and deliberately developing those qualities of the institution that are often referred to as its ethos.
