ABSTRACT

Usually, a complicated question like this consists of a number of sub-questions that can be broken down into a number of smaller, more easily understood, questions. Here, the first thing to do is to untangle the questions and ask them separately:

Were there a General Election tomorrow would you vote? (Please tick the appropriate box below.)

Do you know the name of your local Labour candidate? (Please tick the appropriate box below.)

Yes

No

Complicated questions

Will you vote for the Labour candidate if it is not raining on polling day? (Please tick the appropriate box below.)

Will you vote for the Labour candidate if Labour Party representatives provide free transport to the polling station? (Please tick the appropriate box below.)

Respondents can find it irritating to be asked to indicate their age. If the information is really required for your work then try to locate the question near the end of the questionnaire. If you consider a question to be potentially irritating then perhaps provide some contextual information in the questionnaire as to why this particular question is necessary.
