ABSTRACT

Political/moral philosophers often remark that, apart from insisting that the constitution be ethically acceptable, which usually means liberal democratic, they cannot say much about which territorial space should come under one national constitution, or whether it be federal or whatever, since, they say, these are instrumental questions. Beitz says this from the cosmopolitan viewpoint; Brown says it from the constitutive viewpoint; and Walzer also says it from the communitarian viewpoint.
