ABSTRACT
With three exceptions, the restrictions in the UK on both voting and candidacy broadly conform to international standards. The three categories of people who are denied the franchise to a degree which does not reflect evolving human rights standards are: most prisoners, mental health detainees and ‘aliens’ under British immigration law (that is, residents who are neither British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens).
