Quoting or reporting events and hearsay

There are two main ways of reporting what somebody has said (and indeed what we ourselves may have said on a previous occasion):

(a) Direct speech:

Il direttore mi ha detto: ªPu ò andare a casaº. The manager said to me: `You can go home'.
