ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the role played by leadership and information processing in the development, maintenance, and change of organizational culture. The importance of culture to organizational performance, attitudes, strategic choices, and other variables of interest is exemplified by the number of books, articles, and presentations on this topic in the past decade. The popularity of this topic, however, belies the lack of an intelligible theoretical grounding that characterizes much of the literature. This chapter will present an information processing approach to organizational culture in an effort to align the topic more closely with a theoretical base. We will also address the role of leadership in this approach.
