ABSTRACT

Tourism in the Alps is highly dependent on winter sports. In the Canton of Graubünden (or Grisons, eastern Switzerland), 54 per cent of the overnight stays and about two thirds of the earnings are made in winter. Considering the dominance of winter sports in numerous touristic regions, the economy of these regions— while being dependent on tourism in general—can be considered as excessively monostructured, given the narrow case of winter tourism. This could prove to be highly problematic in view of the uncertainty about climatic change.
