ABSTRACT
This note is not primarily concerned with the theoretical standing of, or language surrounding, the concept of articulation. Rather, it explores the metaphor suggested by that term: the idea that two ‘modes of production’ can coexist, however briefly, during a period of ‘transition’. The issue is also approached at something of a tangent by focusing on the survival of chieftaincy in South Africa’s African reserves.
