ABSTRACT

Concurrently with other anti-bullying strategies, four of the Sheffield Project primary schools were selected to work on an environment intervention which involved playground redesign and improvements. This project was separately funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It was set up jointly in the Departments of Landscape and Psychology at Sheffield University. The project was directed by Anne Beer and Peter Smith; participatory techniques were developed by Lyndal Sheat (1991a, b). Catherine Higgins, a landscape designer, saw the project through design, implementation and monitoring. Secondyear undergraduate landscape design students worked in the schools using participatory design techniques and developed design briefs for each of the schools. Second-year postgraduates produced design and implementation booklets. The schools then implemented aspects of the proposals and this process was monitored. This chapter describes and discusses the processes and results of this project.
