ABSTRACT

Goal setting with teachers emphasised the educational function of school ground improvements, security and safety aspects. Most (though not all) teachers were keen to see changes to the playground environment. Features such as ponds, nature gardens and wild areas were all proposed. There was a strong desire for seating and shelter. Safety issues featured highly in discussion and large play structures such as climbing frames were viewed with suspicion. Supervision aspects were also a concern. Security against vandalism from outside intruders (often older children/teenagers who did not attend the schools) was identified as a necessity.
