ABSTRACT

Harold D.Lasswell, quoted G.Dyer, War, 131 Military history has always focused on generals: they are the stars of the drama-indeed, in many armies stars are their badges of rank. Their strategic decisions are investigated: their personalities are publicized. But for most soldiers generals remain remote, even unimportant figures. They give orders which are transmitted down through a chain of command to their own officers, who are responsible at the shop floor level, as it were, for the day-to-day management of the trade of violence.
