ABSTRACT

The development of mobile phones, particularly smart phones, the possibilities for the once strictly utilitarian telephone have expanded exponentially. Nokia introduced Snake, a retooling of an old video game, in 1997 as a novelty on a new line of phones. Apps for Apes are a program in about 13 zoos worldwide designed to give these highly intelligent primates more stimulation. Angry Birds is a casual game with dozens of levels and sequels. Kate Wilson, the managing director of Nosy Crow, a UK publisher of ebooks and print books for children. Students at the University of Michigan have been experimenting with ways to turn their smart phones into musical instruments, learning to design, build, and play them. One of the projects featured in this chapter have made exciting use of the unique attributes of mobile devices and have found innovative ways to involve users.
