ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates immersive environments can offer unparelled storytelling opportunities to individuals who have the vision and pioneering spirit to work in this arena. A true Virtual Reality environment is an extreme form of cyberspace, a 3D artificial world generated by computers, and a world that seems believably real. A work called Summer branch, developed in the UK by an artist's group called Igloo, uses VR and other digital techniques to recreate a piece of England's New Forest. VR can also be found in commercial entertainment venues. Probably the most impressive example of this is the Disney Quest indoor theme park. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that synchronizes digital data, including text, images, video, and sound, with the real world. More than any other set of technologies, immersive environments and VR gives people the ability to create deeply dimensional narratives and simulations that put the user in the center of the action.
