ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a number of specific audiences and defines how they differ from each other. It is common fallacy for inexperienced developers to assume that the digital storytelling project they are working on will have broad appeal, and that it will be something that everyone will love. Audiences differ greatly, depending on age group, ethnic group, and special interests. Children and teens are among the enthusiastic fans of digital media, and often lead the way when it comes to the adaptation of new forms of interactive entertainment. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), women over 18 constitute a far larger slice of the gaming population than do boys 17 and younger. Gender differences between boys and girls can even involve such minute matters as color preferences. Digital technology has been a boon to many individuals who are physically disabled. A major reason digital works do not succeed is because designer did not create them for a specific audience.
