ABSTRACT
The north-east Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a classic example of an emigrant region. Its history of emigration-both to other countries and to other regions of Italy-extends back four centuries. Moreover, its migratory experiences encompass all major forms of emigration, including permanent emigration with no return, temporary emigration with eventual return and seasonal migration.1
