ABSTRACT

Phototoxicity is a chemically induced nonimmunologic skin irritation requiring

light (photoirritation). The skin response resembles an exaggerated sunburn.

The involved chemical is photoactive, and it may enter into the skin by topical

administration or it may reach the skin by the circulatory system following

ingestion or parenteral administration. Some systemically administered and

possibly topical chemicals may require metabolic conversion to become

photoactive.
