ABSTRACT
The symbolic interactionist focus on the constitution of meanings within interaction makes it a perspective particularly well suited to unpacking the phase of ‘constituting male femaling’. ‘Constituting male femaling’ marks the period where the femaler begins to constitute the meaning of his activities in a serious and sustained way. As femaling experiences and activities increase, many femalers are increasingly drawn to ‘explain’ themselves: to ‘make sense’ of themselves and their activities and to work out where femaling ‘fits’ with the rest of their lives.
