ABSTRACT
In fourteenth-century Europe, the popular imagination was informed by the knowledge that death was both certain and impartial. This gave rise to dramatic representation which took the form of the Dance of Death. Memento mori - we must all die, irrespective of class, wealth or status -combined with recognition of the universality and the random nature of death, comprised the main themes of the dances.
