Hades is often thought of as the underground abode of the dead in Greek mythology. More correctly, Hades was the god of the underworld and ruler of the dead. He acquired this dominion by drawing lots with his two brothers to determine which part of the world they would rule. Zeus and Poseidon received the sky and seas respectively, leaving the underworld to Hades. In Greek mythology there is no annihilation after death. Instead, death is a quality of, rather than a lack of, existence. The underworld dead dwell in cheerless monotony whilst the immortal dead reside in the bliss of Elysium.
