ABSTRACT
What happened to Smith’s work as she moved it from specific communities to professional theatre to television reveals much more than Smith’s well-deserved success as an author and performer. As her performative identity was wrought differently in different contexts, it became clear that Smith’s subjects were not the only ones being interrogated. As she changed venues and audiences, Smith’s own identity within her performances shifted.
