ABSTRACT

Fluency is assessed informally as you listen to the child read. Make sure that the book is appropriate, i.e. that it is at an ‘instructional’ level. If you find that the child struggles with nearly every word, you need to join in with him or her and read together. Otherwise the child will become discouraged. Many teachers find that cataloguing books by readability levels is helpful and refer to the NASEN A-Z Graded List of Reading Books (see page 198) or the framework of levels described by particular reading schemes.
