ABSTRACT

Teacher’s notes: Debbie does not seem to expect meaning. She substitutes with a real word which has the same initial letter (happy/happens). The second substitution also has the correct initial letter but it is a nonsense word (noo/now). Phonics: Debbie seems to know and use initial letter sounds. Is she confusing ow and oo? Action: Debbie needs to talk about the story and predict the content before reading it. When reading together, Debbie’s teacher or parent can scan ahead and help her guess appropriate words, e.g. ‘the girl went out to pl..’. Phonics such as initial consonant blends can be introduced in the context of words which appear in her book.
