ABSTRACT
William was aged six and a half years and had made very little progress in learning the mechanics of reading and writing. His teacher followed the assessments described in Chapter 3 and found that William could just about complete the Stage 1 tasks and was happy to talk about the content of stories. At Stage 2 he had no reliable sight vocabulary and could not read or write any of the single letter sounds. The initial assessment and plan is summarised below.
