ABSTRACT

William made good progress and reached the standard, or criterion, of mastery in about two weeks. Now the teacher selected a further set of 12 words and repeated the procedure of sentence building and mastery learning for these words. However, the previously learnt 12 words were also included in the sentence building and sometimes mixed up with the new set of cards. In this way the linguistic content became richer while the previously learnt words continued to be rehearsed. As words were added to William’s own ‘reading book’, the content of the book became more varied and interesting.
