ABSTRACT

In an interactive classroom, spelling is not confined to studying the week’s lesson on the appointed day. It is a topic that arises out of reading and writing throughout the week. If there is an odd five minutes to fill, the teacher may set the whole class to think of a word family, and find examples of it in books or their own writing. One Y3 class was asked to look out for words beginning with some, the teacher having in mind compound words like something. One girl got so carried away that she looked in the Little Oxford Dictionary, and found all the words, including Somerset!
