ABSTRACT

The selection of activities continued along the same lines as in the first six weeks. Below I shall only mention new activities. (a) Fluency: New words were added to the sentence building from Mr Grump and, subsequently from other similar books, (level B Sunshine reader) The children’s self-made reading books gradually became more interesting as the vocabulary grew. Whenever possible, I would listen to the children re-read their own books. (b) Book of the week phonics: I borrowed four stories from Year 1 called Tog the dog, Mig the pig, Pat the cat and Zug the bug. I decided to use each one in turn as a special focus for the week. I began with ‘Pat the cat’ which I read to the whole class. It was excellent for reinforcing the words we had been learning which ended in ‘at’. The children painted and drew pictures to illustrate the book and we made a display with the book as a centrepiece. The children in the group were encouraged to read and re-read the book either on their own or with a friend. Over the weeks similar activities were repeated with the other books.
