ABSTRACT

The first edition of this book was written only six years ago, but in those few intervening years much has changed. At that time I noted that very little had been written about adults with autistic-spectrum disorders and that, other than a few impressive autobiographical accounts, most reports tended to focus on difficulties and challenging behaviours. However, the last six years have witnessed an explosion of books about adults, many written from personal experience. There have also appeared many accounts by or about individuals who are of normal or above normal intellectual ability, in other words those who are described as being ‘high-functioning’, ‘more able’ or as having Asperger syndrome (or, in the United States, Asperger disorder).
