ABSTRACT
The German name for a SQUARE PIANO is Tafelklavier, or table piano. Since the instrument is actually a rectangular box sitting upon a stand, it resembles a table when the KEYBOARD is covered. Another explanation for the term Tafelklavier is that the piano may also be lifted from the supporting legs and placed on a table for playing (like the clavichord).
