ABSTRACT
The twelfth and thirteenth centuries saw the widespread acceptance of the vernacular as a literary medium, side by side with Latin. From the beginning of the thirteenth century, we also find the vernacular being used to some extent in local documents in Picardy. Indeed, from the year 1254 onwards, French is used as well as Latin even in documents emanating from the royal chancellery in Paris.
