ABSTRACT
All locomotion relies on an animal pushing against a fluid medium (water or air) or against the substratum (the surface of the ground or through soil, mud, sand, etc.). This generates a reaction, an equal and opposite thrust against the animal which pushes it forward (Newton’s third law of motion!). Beating of flagella and cilia have already been considered (see Topic C28).
