ABSTRACT

The IUCD is a very reliable form of reversible contraception but there are some specific problems which can present on an emergency basis. The majority of IUCDs used at the present time in the UK are copper-based. An increasing number of women are using the levonorgesterol intrauterine system (LNG-IUS ‘Mirena’®). This progesterone-coated IUCD is popular because of its increased efficacy and improved sideeffect profile. It is important to remember that with several complications related to IUCD use, contraceptive efficacy is reduced or lost. The woman may already be pregnant or be in need of additional contraception when she presents.
