ABSTRACT
This chapter pursues a different sort of structure from that of the others, and a word of explanation is necessary. Instead of offering a number of short summaries of the work of several main authors, I have chosen to discuss in some detail in this chapter three short essays by one-Roland Barthes-all in the collection Barthes (1977).
