ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, we are going to consider various sorts of discussion about the notion of personal identity. As before, I want to manage two major sorts of discussion, classical sociological work and postmodernist commentary, and to lay out the pros and cons of each approach. Naturally, I shall have to be selective in my examples, and I have tried to focus on central debates in concrete and accessible areas. We can sketch out the main lines of debate before we start on the detail.
