ABSTRACT
Contemporary science and sensibility would reduce our canonic dreams for Japan to ash. We may be losing our ability to nourish a classic culture, that complex blend of values, ideals, practices and standards by which our civilization has tensed its mental and spiritual resources so as to be ever vulnerable to the ‘anarchic shock of excellence’.1 This new condition conspires against the writing and reading, production and consumption of texts of classic stature.
