ABSTRACT

Introduction The majority of studies documenting histological changes found in association with stenting in general are based on stenting of the biliary tree1-5 and the arterial system,6-12 particularly the coronary arteries. The earliest biliary tract studies date from the mid1980s and document mucosal proliferation through the wall of the stent mesh resulting in partial or complete blockage of the lumen. Squamous metaplasia was also noted. Most of these studies were based around endoscopic biopsies that were subjected to electron microscopy and/or light microscopical observations.
