ABSTRACT

Initially, use of the metal stent in the ureter was expected, by the authors, to give a patency similar to that of the biliary tract; however, better results were observed in the ureter. To date, apart from one case (4 years with stents and more than 6 years of malignant disease), the duration of permeability of the stent has not been less than the patient’s length of survival. However, should obstruction occur, and if the patient’s life expectancy and quality of life are good, the procedures described would be considered in order to rid the stent of obstruction.
