ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the author’s experience as a black woman working for equality in the London Borough of Hounslow. It looks at the origins and development of equality initiatives, and provides an important link between the traditional focus on employment issues and the emerging agenda of equality issues in service delivery. It explores the role of an equalities unit in influencing change, and describes the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing context in which local authorities work.
