ABSTRACT
Hume discusses personal identity in two places: in the main body of the Treatise of Human Nature (1978), in Section VI of Part IV of Book I, entitled ‘Of personal identity’, and in an Appendix published a year later with Book III, in which he declares himself wholly dissatisfied with his treatment of the topic in that section, but confesses that he now finds the whole matter a ‘labyrinth’ and that he knows neither how to correct his former opinions nor how to render them consistent: there is no discussion of the topic in the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.
