ABSTRACT
The title of this book, Elementary School Counseling: A Commitment to Caring and Community Building, truly reflects the importance of school counseling and of school counselors as key figures in determining the present of, and more significantly, creating a new future for, elementary school counseling programs. The single most important factor contributing to the success of elementary school counseling programs will be the elementary school counselor’s ability to forge a positive and strong partnership between academicinstruction and school counseling programs (see Chapters 1 and 2). Only then will elementary schools be able to provide children with an education designed to teach them how to become caring self-managers and builders of caring communities. Education therefore is not just about children doing well academically, but reflects a more holistic view in which educators help all children to achieve success in the classroom and in all areas of life and living.
