ABSTRACT
Spina bifida is a congenital condition caused by a failure of the neural tube to fuse posteriorly, usually in the lumbar region. It has a presentation that is variable in severity. The incidence varies widely across the world but is typically 2 per 1000 live births. Improved prenatal diagnosis has resulted in many being aborted, so the current incidence is difficult to estimate.
