ABSTRACT

There are steadily increasing numbers of people who have transplanted organs, some of whom present for incidental surgery. Such transplantations are performed at regional centres, which may be some distance from the patient’s home. Thus, the need for unrelated surgery may arise in hospitals that are not familiar with transplant management. For the purposes of this chapter, the principles of anaesthetic implications that are discussed are those in which the transplanted organ is functioning normally. Nevertheless, whatever the organ transplanted, the adequacy of its function must be checked.
