ABSTRACT
A pulmonary embolus (PE) can originate from many different parts of the vascular system and can have many different causes. Of greatest interest to the anaesthetist are gas embolism, thromboembolism, fat embolism and amniotic fluid embolism. Only the first two will be considered here because of their importance as critical incidents in the operative and postoperative periods, respectively.
