ABSTRACT

In this chapter and Chapter 10, we discuss the question of language variety and translation. By way of introduction to the notion of language variety, here is a text from Luis Martín-Santos’s Tiempo de silencio. It consists of a monologue in which Cartucho, a resident of the Madrid shanty-town, describes a knife-fight he has had with ‘el Guapo’ over a girl. This text can be used as a point of reference for both Practicals 9 and 10, and would repay some discussion in class.
