ABSTRACT
The strongest argument against hypothesising any historical relation between Christianity and social citizenship is that Christianity, and Catholicism in particular, has always stressed the centrality of charity. Charity, given its one-sided emphasis on the Christian obligation to give, is opposed to the distinguishing feature of the modem welfare state: the granting of social rights.
