With a population of about 55 million in 1994 Ethiopia is the country with the third largest population in Africa after Nigeria and Egypt. In area 1,250,000 sq km (483,000 sq miles), it is almost twice as large as Texas and five times the area of the UK. It is unusual in Africa south of the Sahara in having been held as a colonial power for only a few years following the Italian invasion in 1935-6.
