ABSTRACT
Reference was made at the beginning of Chapter 1 to the problem of dividing the world’s land area into an appropriate set of regions for studying the geography of the world below the global level. Two questions have to be addressed: roughly how many regions are required? and how should their membership and limits be determined? Given that there is no objective method of working out the regions to be used, some subjective criteria have to be chosen.
