ABSTRACT

Canada and Australia resemble one another in many ways. Throughout this chapter comparisons are made between the two countries. In two very important respects, however, they differ. First, the natural environment of Canada is characterised by extremely cold conditions for varying periods during the year whereas Australia is characterised over much of its area by hot and dry conditions. Second, Canada shares with the USA the longest land boundary in the world between two countries. Its neighbour has almost ten times as many inhabitants. In contrast Australia enjoys an isolated location between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Table 10.1 contains comparative data for the USA, Canada and Australia. Given the very large trade between Canada and the USA, such a comparison is relevant, Canada being one of the main sources of US imports of primary products.
