ABSTRACT

Houwa is an important Neolithic site near Dandong on the North Korean border which has been virtually unreported outside of China. The human and animal heads, made of both pottery and carved stone, are particularly unusual and intriguing. Many of the heads are grotesque, and as Xu Yu-lin indicates, they may be representations of the supernatural. Others, however, may be simply portraits. The function and meaning of these heads remain to be explained.
