ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter the focus switches to the situation in towns and cities of the South. The range of transport modes and forms found in different contexts is outlined and the nature of the sometimes severe transport problems facing urban areas is discussed. Although there is in reality often more of a continuum from rural to urban areas than a neat division between them, the distinction is used here as a shorthand to highlight the more conspicuous contrasts. Small urban centres and villages in rural areas frequently have features typical of both urban and rural areas. This in no way negates the argument.
