ABSTRACT

The archaeological record which can illuminate the social structure of the early hunter-gatherer society in Denmark is very slender indeed. Comparisons with present-day hunter-gatherer societies can to some degree expand our ideas of the societal forms in Denmark before the introduction of agriculture, but such comparisons will always be problematic; presentday hunters and gatherers are usually dependent upon other societal forms or have been forced into marginal areas, thereby experiencing a modification of their original culture features.
